How to Choose a Personal Trainer (And What to Watch Out For)

Hiring a personal trainer is a meaningful investment — in time, money, and trust. Most people know to check whether someone is certified. Beyond that, the evaluation process gets fuzzy.
The gap between a great trainer and a mediocre one isn't credentials. It's how they listen, how they program, and how they communicate. A trainer can hold every certification available and still give every client the same generic workout. And a trainer with a single solid cert and genuine coaching instincts can change the trajectory of your training.
Here's what actually separates one from the other — and what to watch out for before you sign anything.
Red Flags to Watch For
These aren't worst-case scenarios. They're common enough that you should ask about them directly.
The same program for every client. If a trainer doesn't ask detailed questions about your history, injuries, goals, and schedule before writing your program — that's the signal. A template can be dressed up to look personalized. It isn't.
Counting reps and checking their phone. You're paying for coaching, not presence. If your trainer's attention is divided during your session, you're not getting what you're paying for. Form cues, timing adjustments, and real-time feedback require actual attention.
No progression plan. Random hard workouts aren't programming. If you can't get a clear answer about how your training builds over time — what the next block looks like, why you're doing what you're doing — that's a problem. Good programming has a logic to it, and a good trainer can explain it.
Pushy upselling. Supplements, add-on packages, extended contracts you didn't ask about — a trainer who's focused on your progress isn't focused on upselling you. This one's worth trusting your gut on.
Won't explain "why." Ask why you're doing a specific exercise. Ask why the rep range is what it is. A trainer who can't give you a clear, direct answer — or who deflects with "just trust me" — either doesn't know or doesn't think you deserve to know. Neither is a good sign.
What to Look For
These are the green flags. Notice that they're all about process and communication, not personality or enthusiasm.
Asks detailed questions before writing a single exercise. Goals, training history, injuries, equipment access, schedule, lifestyle — all of it matters before the first program is built. The intake process is where you learn whether a trainer is actually paying attention to you or running a system that looks like attention.
Programs with intent. Every exercise should serve the larger plan, and your trainer should be able to explain how. Not with jargon — just clearly. "We're doing this because..." is a sentence you should hear regularly.
A clear communication cadence. You should know what to expect between sessions. When will you hear from them? How do they handle questions? What does a check-in look like? Adapts based on feedback. The best programming is responsive. If you had a rough week, if something's not recovering well, if your energy has been off — that should show up in how your program is adjusted. A trainer running a fixed 12-week block regardless of your feedback isn't coaching. They're administering a template.
Cares about what's happening outside the gym. Sleep, stress, nutrition, recovery — these aren't separate from your training. They're part of it. A trainer who only cares about what happens during the session is missing most of the picture. Questions to Ask Before You Commit
These five questions cut through the surface-level pitch and get to how a trainer actually works. Ask them of anyone you're considering — including me.
"How do you build my program?" You're looking for: individualized from the start, not templated. If the answer is vague or generic, that tells you something.
"What does communication look like between sessions?" You're looking for: a consistent, defined cadence — not "reach out whenever." Regular check-ins and real feedback between sessions are what separate coaching from session delivery.
"How do you handle weeks when I'm traveling, sick, or slammed at work?" You're looking for: flexibility and adaptation. Your program should account for real life, not assume your schedule is always ideal.
"Can you give me a specific example of how you've helped someone with similar goals?" You're looking for: specificity. Vague success stories ("my clients get great results") aren't the same as a concrete example of what changed and why.
"What happens if it's not a good fit?" You're looking for: a low-pressure, clear answer. A trainer confident in their work doesn't need to lock you into a contract you can't exit.
A Note on Certifications
Certifications matter as a baseline. NASM, NSCA, ACE, ISSA — these are all reputable organizations, and holding one means a trainer has covered the foundational science of exercise. That's worth something.
What a certification doesn't tell you is whether someone can actually coach. It doesn't tell you how they communicate, whether they listen, how they handle a client who's struggling, or whether they'll still be engaged with your progress six months in.
Treat certification as the floor, not the ceiling. What matters more: how long they've been working with clients, whether they continue to learn, and whether they can explain the reasoning behind what they're doing in plain language.
